| RIBLE INTRODUCES BILL TO ASSIST EMS PROVIDERS
|
| Assembly Republican Whip Dave Rible, R-Monmouth, introduced legislation earlier this week that would allow approved medical transportation service providers under the Medicaid program to voluntarily submit a list of drivers they employ to the Department of Human Services which will be forwarded to the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). MVC will monitor the list and promptly notify Medicaid if any driver has had their privileges either suspended or revoked. Medicaid, in turn, will inform the transportation provider who will terminate the driver’s employment.
“Providing safe medical transportation for patients is the highest priority for these companies and that starts with having reliable drivers and dependable transportation,” said Rible. “This legislation will allow companies to focus their efforts on accomplishing this objective while receiving timely information about a driver’s record from the agency that is charged with monitoring their status – the Motor Vehicle Commission.
“Not only will this bill help to reduce the chance for a mishap during patient transport, but it will help providers become more efficient and hopefully result in lower insurance costs. Those savings will ultimately benefit the patient.”
Rible’s bill, A-2554, also stipulates the Department of Human Services may assess the service provider a reasonable fee, based on the number of drivers it employs, to reimburse Medicaid and MVC for the costs associated with maintaining the driver data base.
